  • Impact of patients’ perception of COPD and treatment on adherence and health-related quality of life in real-world: Study in 53 community pharmacies

The use of objective measures such as electronic monitoring devices and blood tests are impractical in clinical practice. Thus, we used the TAI test, a validated self-report questionnaire [16], with acceptable reliability. Patients included in this study are similar to COPD populations included in other studies, where 25.2% of the patients had severe or very severe COPD and 33% of them had experienced an exacerbation in the last 12 months [11].

However, there is no standardised definition, and unreported exacerbations, not evaluated in the present study, have the same clinical relevance. A measure of self-reported adherence, the Test of the Adherence to Inhalers (TAI),32 specifically designed to identify non-adherence to inhalers in asthma and COPD patients, is presently available in Portuguese-Brazilian language. To the best of our knowledge, MTA was the only validated instrument to measure adherence in the Portuguese language at the time patients were recruited for the present study.
