No presente trabalho o Autor tece algumas considerações sobre a formação médica pós-graduada tendente à especialização em Pneumologia, assim como à formação contínua dos Especialistas no limiar do 3º milénio. Para tal, avalia o que se perspectiva no campo das doenças respiratórias a nível mundial e em Portugal, nos próximos 25 anos, pois os factos a observar irão, seguramente, influenciar a actividade futura dos Pneumologistas.

Alerta ainda os responsáveis para a necessidade de se efectuarem estudos prospectivos tendentes a, com maior rigor, se prever como se irão apresentar as doenças respiratórias em Portugal nos próximos anos.

Termina afirmando que será seguramente a partir dos resultados obtidos através daqueles estudos que se poderá, com maior rigor, perspectivar o ensino e a formação contínua na área da Pneumologia.

In this work the Author makes some considerations on medical post-graduate training in Pneumology, as well as on speciatists continuous formation in the beginning of the third millennium. With this purpose, he evaluates the perspective in what concerns respiratory diseases worldwide and in Portugal, for the next 25 years, since these facts will certainly affect the expected Pneumologists work.

The Author also calls responsibles attention to the need of prospective studies leading, with the utmost rigour, to foreseeing the way respiratory diseases will be shown in Portugal in the next years.

He ends by stating that it will surely be from the results obtained through those studies that Pneumology training and continuous formation should be put in perspective.
