class="elsevierStyleBold">Introdução:</span> A tuberculose (TB) é uma importante causa de mortalidade e morbilidade mundial. Em Portugal, na última década do século xx, assistiu-se a uma diminuição da incidência de TB no grupo etário com menos de 15 anos.</p><p id="sp0010" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleBold">Material e métodos:</span> Análise retrospectiva dos casos de TB doença em crianças internadas no Centro Hospitalar de Vila Nova de Gaia entre 1 de Janeiro de 2000 e 31 de Dezembro de 2007. Analisaram-se os respectivos dados epidemiológicos, clínicos, radioló-gicos, microbiológicos e terapêuticos.</p><p id="sp0015" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleBold">Resultados:</span> No período estudado registaram-se 23 casos de tuberculose doença (78% TB pulmonar e 22% TB extrapulmonar). A faixa etária variou dos 6 meses aos 16 anos, predominando o sexo masculino. Todos os doentes tinham sido previamente vacinados com BCG e existia história de contacto prévio com TB em 57%. O ano de 2007 foi aquele em que ocor-reu um maior número de casos. A prova de Mantoux foi positiva em 91% dos casos e o isolamento de <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">M. tuberculosis</span> foi possível em 61%. A colheita de suco gástrico permitiu o isolamento em 1/3 dos casos e a broncoscopia contribuiu para o isolamento do <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">M. tuberculosis</span> em 43% dos casos com suco gástrico negativo. Todos os doentes efectuaram, no mínimo, 6 meses de tratamento com antibacilares, não sendo documen-tadas resistências. A reduced rate of tuberculosis in people aged less than 15 years has been seen in Portugal over the last decade of the twentieth century.</p><p id="sp0035" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleBold">Material and methods:</span> Retrospective analysis of tuberculosis cases in children admitted to the Centro Hospitalar de Vila Nova de Gaia January 1 2000 to December 31 2007. The individual epidemiological, clinical, radiological, microbiological and treatment information was analysed.</p><p id="sp0040" class="elsevierStyleSimplePara elsevierViewall"><span class="elsevierStyleBold">Results:</span> We found 23 cases of tuberculosis disease (78% pulmonary tuberculosis and 22% extra-pulmonary tuberculosis). Children’s ages varied from 6 months to 16 years, with the male gender predo-minant. All patients had previously been vaccinated with BCG and there was a prior contact with TB in 57%. 2007 was the year with the highest number of cases. The Mantoux test was positive in 91% cases and <span class="elsevierStyleItalic">M. tuberculosis</span> isolation was possible in 61%.
