ABSTRACT

We don’t want to predict the future, but to draw some health “pending problems” and based on available data and current tendencies, imagine as much as possible, some problems and eventual research fields in a near future.

We point out the demographic tendencies of world population and Its health consequences: rise of life expectation, population ageing and increase of chronic diseases.

We board those we think are the main challenges to the respiratory system referring the increasing of smoking habits as the cause of a great amount of health problems in this area: lung cancer, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and emphysema. Other challenges for the years to come are the Increasing of asthma prevalence and its understanding.

We talk about the expected evolution In respiratory infectiology, mainly the evolution of tuberculosis, HIV infection and future perspectives in what concerns diagnosis, treatment and research areas.
